New Year's Message

New Year's Message

Dear Sawa World Friends,

I write this New Year’s message with immense joy and gratitude for all of Sawa World’s new developments and achievements in 2011. I would like to start by expressing my appreciation for the Team’s hard work and dedication, as well as the individuals and organizations that supported us this year.

Lessons Learned

We learned so much this year! One of the most important lessons was that instead of rapidly expanding our programs to five other countries, it was more effective to carefully monitor our approach and impacts in one country. And in Uganda, we saw how providing intensive training in community reporting and monthly stipends for the Sawa Youth Reporters made an incredible difference in their confidence, future dreams and quality of life. It is truly inspiring to see that our work is starting to spark a new generation of leaders in the world’s most impoverished communities.

Much to Celebrate

This year was full of incredible milestones. One of our key accomplishments was the creation of the Media Community Outreach Plan by local stakeholders in Uganda. This meets our goal of reaching millions instantly with local solutions for solving their own poverty related issues. We do this through training vulnerable unemployed youth, providing them with income, having them document the Sawa Leaders’ successes in poverty reduction and share them with communities all across their countries. The Plan outlines a strategy to reach these communities through local media partnerships and tactics. Learn more the Media Plan and New Partnerships of 2011.

Looking Ahead

2012 will have two main goals: growing the programming and impacts in Uganda, and focussing on income development through new and fresh ideas including setting up a social enterprise. We will work with organizations such as Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream who have hired us to document their sustainability efforts in Uganda. The profits will be used to cover our overhead costs. This social enterprise will help us operate in addition to general donations from individuals, foundations and corporations.

May your 2012 be magical and all of your biggest dreams be realized.

With much love,

Daphne Nederhorst
