3 Heroes in Canada - September 2009

Nadia Kanegai from Vanuatu and Robert Kalyesubula from Uganda arrived in Vancouver two weeks after Seleman from Rwanda arrived. The team of three Sawa Heroes is now complete. Their schedules are filled with meetings, presentations and media interviews where they can tell their stories of leadership and change. All three are in Canada to collaborate with 120 social change leaders at the Connecting for Change Dialogue through the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education.

In just the first three days after arriving, Nadia presented her story of how she changed the lives of over 10,000 in her community to the Centre of Sustainability and Social Innovation at the Sauder School of Business. The Centre will indentify effective partner organizations to support her community empowerment efforts in Vanuatu . She also met with the Common Wealth of Learning and Vancouver-based solar energy companies to explore collaboration efforts to help isolated communities in Vanuatu with access to health care and communication.

And after arriving less than 24 hours, Dr. Robert presented at the Simon Fraser University, Segal School of Business as part of the Workshop on Social Innovation. Seleman inspired 25 marginalized youth (Leave Out Violence) about overcoming trauma and violence and presented to over 200 high school students about his experience as a child soldier.
